From the mountains of Nepal to the coast of Mozambique, we’re bridging inequities for people facing cancer around the world.
Africa and the Middle East
When we know what we’re treating, we can proactively channel medicine and strengthen local healthcare systems. Our efforts include:
- Adding new countries to our Solidarity Fund, which provides access to molecular diagnostic systems and test kits in under-resourced settings
- Partnering with patient associations to identify diagnostic needs across Africa
In October 2023, the first patients began receiving HER2- HR+ advanced breast cancer treatment in Mozambique. The Humanitarian Partnership for Access to Critical Treatments (Humanitarian PACT) is currently supporting these efforts, with plans to expand.
Asia Pacific, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia
We successfully import cancer treatments into Asia Pacific by partnering with governments, healthcare practitioners, and patient associations. In Eastern Europe and Central Asia, since we first opened access to treatment, hundreds of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) patients are now living beyond their initial diagnosis. Our efforts include:
- Implementing the Max Schooling and Last Mile initiatives, with Max Schooling being a particularly innovative program that addresses the often-overlooked victims of chronic disease diagnoses
- Bridging critical access to diagnostic systems and test kits to our partner institutions whose patients cannot afford to travel out of the country for a blood test
In March 2024, the first treatment for adult patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia were administered in Armenia and Nepal. It’s part of a three-year collaboration with BeiGene to provide access to the medicine in 29 low- and middle-income countries.
Latin America
Outside of accessing treatment, the largest barrier patients face in their journey with cancer is understanding their disease and gaining emotional support. Our efforts include:
- Guiding patients and their families through their treatment lifecycle with disease education and support
- Empowering patients by partnering with local patient associations, cancer advocates, and healthcare professionals
In September 2019, 11 patients in Guatemala gained access to hope when a second-line treatment for CML was approved for importation by the country’s Ministry of Health. This achievement was made possible through our team and partner physicians’ relentless efforts and commitment to patients.
South Asia
Our team in South Asia organizes critical support group meetings for thousands of patients each year. Our efforts include:
- Providing pathways for emotional and community support for patients facing cultural stigmatization
- Hosting fundraisers and awareness campaigns through Chai for Cancer
We partner with Friends of Max, one of the largest patient associations in the world supporting those with CML and GIST in India. We provide a safe space for people living with cancer and their caregivers to connect with physicians and each other to help overcome stigma.
