Barriers to Access

Finding effective, affordable cancer treatment is a long and often difficult journey for patients living in low- and middle-income countries. They may not be able to access diagnostics, medication, and support – some can’t even afford bus fare to make it to the nearest clinic.

Systemic Barriers

Social / Cultural Barriers

  • 80%

of patients are diagnosed with breast cancer at the metastatic stage

Patients often have limited access to disease education, which makes it harder to know when, where, and how to get treatment

Go Maya, a mother from Nepal who receives medication free of charge through The Max Foundation

“Throughout this ordeal, I was hoping to grasp any bit of information that could explain my condition. Understanding my diagnosis has empowered me with knowledge, allowing me to invest in the right treatment. My journey has been one of healing and enlightenment, all because I was truly listened to.”

Financial Barriers

  • $1.2T

in annual economic costs related to cancer

Patients can’t afford the hospital consult, diagnostic tests, or medication, or the cost of traveling to the clinic and missing work

San Non, a mother from Cambodia who receives medication free of charge through The Max Foundation

“I got in a taxi and came to [the hospital], the doctor did many tests, I didn’t know much. Then the doctor told me that I have chronic myeloid leukemia, and then asked me if I could afford the treatment. I told the doctor that I didn’t even have the money to come to this hospital at first, other people helped me to get here.”

Structural / Systemic Barriers

  • 5

Fewer than 5 mammography units per 1 million residents in Africa and Asia

Diagnostic capabilities, like education and equipment, may not be available in the country

Dr. Fatima Cardoso, President of the ABC (Advanced Breast Cancer) Global Alliance

“Access to adequate diagnosis and treatment is paramount to change the survival and the quality of life of patients with advanced breast cancer. Together, we can make a bigger difference than isolated in improving the lives of patients and their families.”

How you can help us bridge access

The Max Foundation and its partners support patients in low- and middle-income countries at no cost to them, for as long as they need. Your support enables us to expand medication access, improve diagnostics, and care for more patients in need.
